Complications Knee Joint Replacement

Infection (picture) is one of the most serious complications in joint replacement surgery. The implant has to be removed and a new prosthesis can only be inserted if the infection has settled. This is called two-stage revision surgery. Mechanical loosening without infection caused by bone (osteo) lysis around the implant or wear of the prosthesis can usually be treated by one-stage revision knee joint replacement.
