Operation

The surgical approach to hip resurfacing is similar to hip replacement.

Instead of a stemmed implant the surgeon prepares the femoral head in order to cover it with a standard metal cup. Thereby the femoral neck is preserved.

The pelvic (acetabular) cup needs to exactly match the femoral surface replacement in order to create a smooth metal on metal bearing. Very few patients mention squeeking of the implant which seems to be related to an interrupted lubrication film.

Computer assistance can be very helpful in order to achieve precise implant positioning which is vitally important for best function in a long lasting hip resurfacing. The surgical approach in hip resurfacing is less soft tissue sparing because the femoral component is larger in comparison to conventional hip replacement .
