Arthritis in the knee joint can cause pain and instability. Replacement of the joint surfaces with prosthetic components and re-balancing of the knee joint offers a better quality of life with greater mobility and less pain.
There are other treatment options. Medications may be sufficient to treat pain and deal with symptoms of arthritis to a certain extend. We recommend physical therapy therapy before considering surgery. Injections of pain relievers with a corticosteroid can be helpful. Arthroscopic surgery of the knee joint might be indicated in the early stages of arthritis as long as the cartilage cover of the joint is still existing. Repositioning bones (osteotomy) or fusing bones (arthrodesis) are surgical methods attempting to change the load bearing of the joint.
